Young Adult Transition Program (Fall 2017)
This semester I will be returning as an intern for the Young Adult Transition Program. Last semester, I learned so much about working with disabled individuals. It was not only educational but also very rewarding. I started off this week by meeting with Dr. Laughlin and the other student coordinators to talk about the goals for this semester and how to execute each school. The Wayne district will be coming every Tuesday and Thursday. The Banyan district will be coming over other Friday. The main focus for this week was to have the teachers (student volunteers) learn who their student was (personality, hobbies, likes, and dislikes). The Wayne school came on Thursday for the first time this semester. They seemed very excited to be there. After an introduction, the students were assigned to their teacher. They were given the freedom to do whatever they wanted the first day. This included playing a sport/activity or going for a walk. The first official day was this past Friday with the Banyan students. There were many new faces and all of the student seemed very excited to be back. First an icebreaker was played to get the students comfortable with everyone. Then they were each assigned a teacher and were told to explore the gym (weight room, equipment room, etc). To end off the session, a group game was played. Two teams were created to play a game of scooter ball. Overall, both schools enjoyed their time! Eventually, we will be incorporating diet recording and planning for each student.
